The condor, Kuntur, is associated with Hanan Pacha – the upper world in Andean cosmology.

From its height, the condor sees the landscape in its entirety. Therefore, it has become a symbol of wisdom, clarity and a larger perspective. Hanan Pacha is associated with the sky, light and contact with that which is greater than ourselves.

In many Andean traditions, the condor is said to carry prayers and intentions between humans and the upper world. It reminds us to sometimes lift our gaze, see the big picture, and create space for inspiration and insight.

This handmade brass figurine is made in Peru and fits on an altar, a mesa or as a beautiful symbol in the home.

Three worlds in Andean cosmology

Together, the snake (Uku Pacha), the puma (Kay Pacha) and the condor (Hanan Pacha) represent the tripartite worldview that recurs in many Andean traditions. Each figure carries its own symbolism, but together they remind us of the balance between the inner world, life on earth and the larger perspective.
