Citronella Essential Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the Cymbopogon plant species, specifically Cymbopogon Winterianus. Citronella oil is known as a plant-based insecticide, a biopesticide with a non-toxic mode of action, and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948. The main countries producing this oil are Indonesia and China, which together produce about 40% of the world's citronella essential oil.
In addition to being useful as an insect repellent for the skin, this oil is good for excessive sweating, oily skin and hair, and acts as a deodorant. It is said to relieve pain due to rheumatism and arthritis, and fight flu, colds, and minor infections. The oil is good for the digestive system to heal colitis, intestinal infections and get rid of intestinal parasites. It relieves menstrual cramps and pain and speeds up the heartbeat. When used in a vaporizer, it is known to dispel fatigue, headaches and neuralgia, as well as create a mood of joy and optimism. Avoid use during pregnancy and in children under 3 years of age. Do not consume internally.
Ancient cultures in India, Egypt and elsewhere where the grass species Cymbopogon grew, used it as an insecticide, especially against mosquitoes. At that time, people settled near rivers and streams. While this was good in many ways, it also meant an abundance of insects that brought disease and killed people. So the use of this grass as an insecticide was vital at that time.
